Back 40 Recap
Stuff I saw & heard
- Michael VDH is a stud. He not only handed it to all the other 5 lap men, he obviously PUSHED the limits. The kid was dirt and scrapes top to bottom, CRACKED the top tube of his Trek Superfly on the 2nd lap, crushed his saddle along the way and managed to win by about 7 minutes and displayed one of best attitudes out there. Michael, keep it up and enjoy the new 29er wheels from NoTubes.
- Both Seema and Janice were awesome and finishing the 5 laps too. I tried to stop Janice from starting her 5th, but she went and did it anyway.
- Jason Wiebe from Tinker. The kid is new to racing, just out there blasting away. He was sitting 3rd earlier in the race, maybe faded a little bit later, but finish 6th against a lot of other fast older dudes. Jason, you are also a stud.
- There were lots of other great battles in the other races as well. Wayne Bishop, Gerald and Gord H were all really close at the front of the 3 lap race. I haven’t seen Wayne look that wrecked after a race all season.
- Same in the Women’s 3 lap race. Jane B and Charlene G were 2 seconds apart at the finish.
- The 1 lap races also saw some very young talent on display, with two U15 boys taking 1st and 3rd.
- It was really great to see a lot of racers who have not been out to races in the past few years.
- Summer of Brad met it’s ultimate goal with Brad Enns taking the Butter Belt. What else can I say.
- The course seemed to be well received, we know it was pretty tough with 1000 plus feet of climbing per lap (and some pretty steep ones at that).
The Deer Incident
But by far the best story of the day was the A&L racer from Brandon (I think it was Aaron Check), WHO WAS HIT BY A DEER during his race. Overheard him saying a rider higher up the hill spooked it and it came crashing down the hill and right into him. Cool. Now you’ve got an awesome story for the grand kids some day.
Final Thanks
Thanks is the all 123 racers who came out and supported the Back 40.

Here are the results. I need to fix the formatting, but here are for now.
Thanks
Big thanks to the roughly 120 racers who came out and supported the 2011 Back 40. It was a beauty day, hope you all had fun. We will get the results posted as quickly as Tim’s little fingers can type. But he’s probably still not even home at 8:35 as I type this. We’ll post a better recap on Monday.
Registration, Shirts & Trophies
Online preregistration closes tonight at 9pm. All preregistered adults get entered for a draw for a set of NoTubes wheels. Shirts are ready now too. There will be very limited supply. First come, first served – cash only at the race. $20 Adults, $15 kids sizes. We’ve also been working on the “trophies”.
Updated Course Map & Video
It was great to see so many riders out on the trails checking out the course at the pre-ride last night. Most of the usual suspects from Tinker, a herd of ABES, the long lost Friesen boys, Phil T, Garry B, Kevin M and friends. Probably others as well. Good times!
I have updated the course map, know that James and the gang have most of the trail work done. It is getting fast on the eastern half looking over the valley. There is one open field downhill that is super fast and flowy. Click to view the map larger.
Back40 pre-ride – YES
James has emailed that the trails are ready, so the pre-ride tonight, Tuesday, August 9th, is on. Please bring your own water and be there by 6:45. We will meet at James Friesen’s house (Tinker Creek Cycle sign by his driveway). If you need directions to Jame’s place, please email me before 2pm today. info(at)elementbdesign.com
OK, we know some guys wanna pre-ride the course, so Tim and I figured we’d invade the TNR and see if anyone wants to meet out at Tinker for a ride.
So if you want to pre-ride the course, make your way out to Tinker Creek by 6:45pm, this Tuesday.
We will meet in front of Jame’s place in Tinker (hope that is OK with James), not at the race venue. We will ride over to the race venue. So if you want directions on where to meet for this ride, please email me and I will send directions, info(at)elementbdesign.com
50km Winner = NoTubes wheels

If you pre-register online for the Back 40, you can win a set of NoTubes wheels, but now we have added another set of NoTubes wheels. This set will go to the overall Winner of the 50km race (either male or female, one set of wheels only). So, you now have TWO chances at winning NoTubes wheels.
James, John, Alf, Linc and other locals are all doing a bunch of work to get the trails primed and ready. It should be awesome.
Back 40 Update – Registration, Draw Prizes & Kids/Youth Races
So, we’re getting down to crunch time for the Back 40 race coming on August 14th out in Tinker. James and the local gang is doing lots of trail work, mowing, cutting and making sure the course is super sweet. The new venue out at Tinker will surely offer a new challenge, although it is a shorter loop, it is mostly sweet singletrack, challenging but VERY fun.
Registration
We are hoping to have more details finalized this week and are shooting to have all info updated by the 28th (this Thursday) on the site, as well as going LIVE with our own registration which will be powered with PayPal.
Draw Prizes
This year we will also be offering some great Draw Prizes, including a set of wheels from NoTubes. All pre-registered adult racers will be entered for this draw (full details to come).

Kids Racing
Lincoln is also spearheading a kids course for this year, so we will have “official” racing for the U7, U9, U11 & U13 crowd. So make it a family event and you can all race.
Back40 Poster & Course Map
It’s time to get rolling on the marketing. This year, Alf is the club model.
But even more importantly, James provided us with a 2011 Course Map. Check it out.
